Unawatuna is arguably Sri Lanka's most famous beach — a horseshoe bay of golden sand with calm, clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Just 5km from Galle Fort, it offers a beachy, backpacker-meets-boutique atmosphere with guesthouses, surf shops, and beach bars lining the shore. The area has evolved from a budget backpacker stop into a more diverse destination with boutique hotels and upscale restaurants appearing alongside the traditional guesthouses.
