Galle Fort

Galle Fort is a 36-hectare fortified old city on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 and extensively fortified by the Dutch East India Company from the 17th century. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, it is one of the best-preserved colonial fortifications in Asia and a rare example of a living heritage site where residents, businesses, and cultural institutions coexist within 400-year-old walls. The fort's cobbled streets are lined with meticulously restored Dutch colonial buildings housing boutique hotels, independent art galleries, design studios, jewellery shops, and farm-to-table restaurants. The rampart walls offer sweeping Indian Ocean views and serve as the fort's social promenade — locals and visitors gather at sunset to watch cricket matches played on the fort's interior green.
