Chelsea is where Manhattan's art world lives and breathes. The neighborhood's western blocks house over 200 galleries — the highest concentration of contemporary art spaces in the world. On any given Thursday evening, gallery openings draw crowds in black along 24th and 25th Streets, and the art spills outdoors onto the High Line, the revolutionary elevated park built on a disused freight rail line. Chelsea Market, housed in the former Nabisco factory where Oreos were invented, is one of the city's great food destinations. The neighborhood's residential streets mix classic brownstones with sleek new glass towers, many offering views of the Hudson River and the High Line below. The LGBTQ+ community has deep roots here, and the neighborhood retains a welcoming, progressive energy even as luxury development has raised the price floor significantly.
