Maafushi is the poster child of the Maldives' local island tourism revolution. Before 2009, non-resort tourism was essentially illegal in the Maldives. For property investors, Maafushi represents the Maldives' highest-yield guesthouse market. Operational guesthouses generate gross yields of 12-15%, driven by year-round occupancy from budget-conscious European, Asian, and domestic travellers. The island's proven tourism model, established brand recognition, and proximity to Malé make it a lower-risk entry point than emerging island destinations.
