Kota Gede is where Yogyakarta's story began. Founded in 1582 as the capital of the Mataram Kingdom, this historic quarter retains its maze of narrow alleys lined with ornate Javanese houses, their mosaic-tiled facades hinting at the silver trade wealth that built them.
