Fort Frederick still guards the harbour entrance, and the ancient Koneswaram Hindu temple perches dramatically on Swami Rock. The east coast city is emerging from decades of post-conflict underinvestment, making it one of Sri Lanka's most promising frontier markets. Pristine beaches, whale watching, and diving attract growing tourism. Property prices are among the lowest in Sri Lanka.
