Shimogyo

Kyoto's modern gateway where a dramatic station hub and Shinkansen connectivity meet ancient Buddhist temples and emerging urban energy

Sobre Shimogyo

Shimogyo is where contemporary Kyoto meets its ancient soul. The ward is anchored by Kyoto Station — Hiroshi Hara's dramatic 1997 masterwork of glass and steel that serves as the city's front door, welcoming millions of visitors with its soaring atrium, rooftop garden, and dramatic staircase light shows. It's a bold architectural statement in a city known for wooden temples, and it sets the tone for a ward that embraces modernity without forgetting its roots. Just north of the station, two of Japan's largest Buddhist temples — Higashi Hongan-ji and UNESCO-listed Nishi Hongan-ji — preside over spacious grounds that provide a contemplative counterweight to the station's commercial energy. The western part of the ward, centered on Umekoji Park, offers a family-friendly atmosphere with the Kyoto Railway Museum and Kyoto Aquarium. For investors, Shimogyo's value proposition is straightforward: it's the only Kyoto ward with direct Shinkansen access, ensuring permanent demand from the widest possible tenant and visitor pool.
